Bjj weight classes typically start at 54 kg (119 lbs) for male adult competitors and 48 kg (106 lbs) for female adult competitors. These are the lightest divisions, often referring to 16-year-olds and above, despite the age being mentioned. Competition weight classes increase in weight increments every 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs) for men and 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs) for women, until the maximum weight classes are reached. These are generally considered as being the heaviest divisions for adults at 100 kg (220 lbs) for males and 80 kg (176 lbs) for females. It is crucial for competitors to carefully manage their weight in the days leading up to a competition, as they require to weigh in at the starting weight class for their division so that one cannot weigh-in at an excessive weight. They can cut from their usual weight but are expected to do so within the regulating amounts.
